Godavari water before 2014 polls
Godavari water will come to the city a few months before the Assembly elections in 2014. Though the Water Board aims to complete the project by December 2013, sources said the project would be commissioned and water will be supplied to citizens two or three months before the polls in 2014.
Phase-I of the Godavari project, costing Rs 3,800 crore, will bring 172 million gallons of water per day to the city. It will service the surrounding municipal areas of Sainikpuri, Cantonment, Kapra, Alwal, Malkajgiri, Qutbullapur, Kukatpally, Rajendernagar and Serilingampally.
The current demand for water supply in the city is 460 MGD, but the Water Board is supplying only 340 MGD, a major shortfall, that deprives the surrounding municipal areas, many of which get water once in three days, some only once in seven days.
With the Godavari’s inflow, the total supply will cross over 500 MGD. Phase-I of Godavari and Phase-III of Krishna have been planned envisaging the water requirements of the city and its surroundings up to 2017.
The L&T-led joint venture has speeded up the laying of the pipeline in Medak district. The project has been divided into three packages to lay the 186-km long pipeline from Yellampally barrage in Karimnagar district to Ghanpur near Sha-mirpet on city outskirts.
Of the 53-km pipeline to be laid under package-I, the laying of 32-km long pipeline has been completed. Likewise, 22km each of the 74-km pipeline in package-II and the 58-km pipeline in package-III have been laid.
The land acquisition is almost complete except for 200 acres of forest land.
