GHMC sits over major projects
Major environmental, civic and transport infrastructure projects costing hundreds of crores of rupees have been sanctioned in the last five years, but the GHMC has not completed a single one.
Works worth Rs 1,700 crore pertaining to construction of cement and BT roads, development of parks, repairs of manholes, construction of link and parallel roads, widening of roads, construction of flyovers, road over bridges, culverts and toilets, and widening of drains, to name a few, are pending.
In the year 2011-2012, 298 projects were sanctioned, but not even tendered. The tender process has been completed in 4,508 projects, but not executed. A total of Rs 923.51 crore was sanctioned in 2011-2012. TD floor leader in GHMC Singireddy Srinivas said that since the formation of Greater Hyderabad, corporation officials have been showing on paper that works worth crore of rupees have been sanctioned. This gives the impression that development of infrastructure will take place on a large scale.
“The citizens of surrounding municipalities feel that the development activities were better with lower taxes, when they were und-er the local municipality. After the formation of Greater Hyderabad, while property taxes have increased, development activities have come down,” he said.
