Ganesh immersion litter worries GHMC
The twin events of the Telangana march and Ganesh immersion, which come hours before the CoP-11 festival starts on October 1, have left the authorities a worried lot. While the state government is concerned about the law and order situation, Greater Hyderabad Muni-cipal Corporation is racking its brains on how to clear the garbage generated by the two events and then get the city ready in about 12 hours for the global biodiversity conference.
Lakhs of people throng the main roads and the lakes, particularly Hussainsagar, for the immersion of Ganesh idols. This year. it is scheduled for September 29 but is expected to go on till afternoon the following day. The festival, on average, generates about 1,500 metric tonnes of additional garbage over and above the regular 3,500 metric tonnes. “It usually takes at least three days for GHMC to clear the garbage generated by the immersion. Many CoP-11 delegates will have arrived by then,” a civic official said.
