Families say no, lovers end lives

Parental opposition caused the death of two young people. In the tragic incident, a youth committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train at Lakdikapul in the early hours of Wednesday. A few hours earlier, his lover set herself ablaze at Shankarpalli. The couple, who were cousins, were disappointed that their families objected to their marriage. The deceased, E. Shrikanth, 22, son of E. Buchaiah, and K. Maheshwari, 19, daughter of K. Narasimhulu, both residents of Singapuram village, Shankarpalli, Rangareddy district, were in love for the last four years and wanted to marry each other, Shankarpalli police said.

While Maheshwari was an Intermediate second year student at a private college in Shankarpalli, Shrikanth had finished his BSc last year. Maheshwari doused herself with kerosene on Tuesday evening before setting herself alight. Her parents were away from home at the time. According to Shankarpalli Sub-Inspector, B. Chaitanya Kumar, Maheshwari died on the spot as she received 90 per cent burns. Hearing the tragic news of her death, Shrikanth left his home and came to the city. According to Nampally Railway police, Srikanth’s body was found on the railway tracks few meters away from Lakdikapul Railway station. “We got the information from the station master around 1 am that a dead body was found on the track. Later the body was identified as Shrikanth’s,” said head constable K. Subba Rao.

According to one of Shrikath’s relatives, Maheshwari had called Shrikanth on his mobile on Monday evening and said that she would commit suicide if he did not take her away from her home and marry her. “She told him that her parents were going to fix her marriage with another person, and if Shrikanth won’t marry her at once, she would commit suicide,” he said. Both Shankarpalli police and Nampally Railway police have booked cases under Section 174 of CrPC. Shrikanth’s body was handed over to his parents after the post-mortem at Osmania General Hospital

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
