Ex-minister told to give proof
The AP High Court on Monday directed former minister P. Shankar Rao to file an affidavit to substantiate his allegation of there being a criminal conspiracy behind the government's sale of red sanders by the government. A Division Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice P.C. Ghose and Justice Vilas V. Afzalpurkar, told the petitioner's counsel that allegations could not be made without proper evidence or documents.
Earlier, advocate-general A. Sudarshan Reddy brought to the Bench's notice that there was no truth in the allegations. After perusing the affidavit filed by the state government, informing the court that the kin of the victims had already been paid compensation of Rs 2 lakh each and Rs 10,000 as funeral expenses, the Bench expressed satisfaction. It, however, questioned the wisdom of paying compensation in such cases as it may amount to encouraging consumption of liquor.
