Docs blamed for woman’s death
A 26-year-old woman, who delivered a baby boy on Friday morning, died in the evening triggering protests from her family. While the family member alleged negligence on the part of the doctors who were attending to her, the doctors maintain that they tried their best to save her.
K. Kumar, a photographer residing at Yedulabad in Ghatkesar, admitted his wife Bhagyalakshmi to the Koti Maternity Hospital on Thursday night and she delivered boy at 8.30 am. Bhagyalakshmi was said to be fine, though she was on a saline drip after the delivery. Nagaraju, a family friend, alleged that the hospital staff demanded and took Rs 600 from Kumar, for handing over his newborn son, but later didn’t allow him to see his wife saying that she was undergoing treatment. “We came to know that her condition was serious but they didn’t allow us to see her. Their negligence resulted in her death,” he alleged.
However, RMO, N. Sarada, attributed the death to Amniotic Fluid Embolism, a rare condition which occurs among one in 10,000 patients. It’s an obstetric emergency in which amniotic fluid, foetal cells, hair, or other debris enters the mother’s blood stream via the placental bed of the uterus and triggers an allergic reaction resulting in cardio respiratory (heart and lung) collapse. “Bhagyalakshmi was fine after the delivery, but developed dyspnoea (shortness of breath) at around 3 pm. Doctors had been attending to her since then but she couldn’t save her and she died at 4.30 pm. We advised post-mortem but they took away the body,” the doctors said. Police were deployed at the hospital anticipating trouble, but no untoward incident occurred.
