Dinesh wins, is top cop till 2014
Mr V. Dinesh Reddy has been appointed director-general of police (head of the police force) for a period of two years on Saturday, after his appointment was challenged the first time. He will hold the post till September 2014.
The government selected Mr Dinesh Reddy from a list of three officers empanelled by the Union Public Service Commission, following an order of the AP High Court. As reported earlier by this newspaper, Mr Dinesh Reddy gets a longer tenure. He was supposed to have retired on September 2013, but with the fresh appointment, he will stay on till September 2014, in line with the Supreme Court guidelines which mandate a two-year tenure for top officials.
The list sent by the UPSC to the state government contained the names of two other officers: Mr T.P. Das and Ms Aruna Bahaguna. Mr Dinesh Reddy’s name was at the top. The UPSC list did not have the name of Mr Umesh Kumar. AP is the first state that has implemented the recommendations of the Supreme Court in the Prakash Singh case regarding the DGP’s appointment.
