Constable jailed for 22 years seeks pardon
The family members of Abdul Qadeer, a police constable who has been languishing in jail for 22 years for the murder of his superior officer, met former Praja Rajyam chief and MP Chiranjeevi and submitted a memorandum requesting his release. Qadeer murdered ACP Sataiah 22 years ago. Ms Sabira Begum, wife of Abdul Qadeer, along with his son and brother requested Mr Chiranjeevi to take up the issue with Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan. They requested him to recommend for the pardon of Qaleem.
Ms Sabira Begum lamented the fact that her husband, despite having completed his sentence seven years ago, is still in jail. Qaleem’s health has deteriorated in jail and he is currently undergoing treatment at Gandhi hospital. “Constant imprisonment has weakened his body, now he looks much older than his age. There is gangrene in his leg, it has become completely black. The doctor told us that amputation is the last resort,” said Ms Sabira Begum with teary eyes.
Accepting the memorandum from Qadeer’s family, Mr Chiranjeevi promised to help them out and said he would approach the governor. Abdul Qadeer is not being released on parole on the occasions of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Azha for the last three years. Qaleem was released for seven days on June 3 this year, after the death of his mother. However, he was confined in the jail again.
