College principal accused of abuse
About 20 students of Dr Narayana College of Hotel Management, Alwal, damaged furniture and broke windowpanes of the college building on Tuesday morning, after two girl students complained that the principal, Mr Amitabh Das, tried to sexually harass them. Accusing the principal of asking ‘favours’ from the girls, who had failed to score adequate marks in the examinations, the irate students sought his suspension. The protesting students, all friends of the victims, also looked for Das, but he has been absconding since the allegations came to light.
One of the girls has registered a complaint with the police against the principal. She said the prinicipal ill-treated and bad-mouthed her, accusing her of not following the dress code. Police booked a case under IPC Section 504 and 509. The college authorities, who said they have temporarily suspended the principal, also claimed the allegations were wrong, but they were probing further.
The college director, Mr Ramanujam, claimed, “We checked with one of the girls who was said to have complained against Mr Das, but she denied complaining at all. She said two seniors of the college used her name (to make the allegation).” He said the two senior students were barred from taking the practical examinations, which would have provoked them into planning this “drama,” by “misusing” the girls’ name.
