CM to launch key Metro phase today
The Hyderabad Metro Rail project is all set to enter into a crucial stage: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy will inaugurated the work to erect launching girders on to the metro-rail pillars at Uppal on Sunday.
A box-type iron launching girder will be about 112-ft in dimension and weigh about 300 tonne.
Each girder will be first lifted on top of two pillars, with two 150-tonne hydraulic cranes. With the girders in place, a 72-km viaduct will be constructed for the rail tracks to be laid.
Mr Reddy will also unveil a plaque, signalling the official launch of the HMR project.
The launch ceremony is already delayed. Earlier, the CM had tried to set it up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh twice, but it did not materialise as the PM’s programmes were cancelled at the last minute.
The launch ceremony also coincides with Mr Reddy’s completion of two years in office.
“The Chief Minister will press the button and symbolically start the hydraulic cranes for erecting launching girders on to the metro rail pillars.
The actual lifting of the launching girder and viaduct segments will be done only during night for safety reasons,” said N.V.S. Reddy, managing director, HMR.
