The state Cabinet which is being convened by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on August 31 after a gap of two months gained political significance for more than one reason. Amid indications that the Congress central leadership would go in for an overhaul of government and party machinery by end of September, several ministers were apprehensive that it might be the last Cabinet meet for them.

Secondly, all eyes were on roads and buildings minister Dharmana Prasada Rao, who put in papers on “moral grounds” following Central Bureau of Investigation naming him as accused in the charge sheet in Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s illegal investments case. The minister, who went on a backfoot after the initial emotions died down, is said to have been “persuading” by his colleagues to once again put pressure on the Chief Minister not to accept his resignation in the scheduled Cabinet meet. The minister is unlikely to attend the meeting while it is to be seen whether the ministers who are also in the line up in CBI cases will raise their voice in the meeting.

The Chief Minister’s camp is confident that the meeting would be a smooth affair. It was in an upbeat mood stating that he became “stronger” after the latest trip to Delhi. The Chief Minister’s camp has credible information that the Centre is working towards certain political initiatives with regard to Telangana. “The Centre is seriously considering a development council for the region,” a close confidant of the Chief Minister said adding that there would be no change of guard. The reshuffle of Cabinet will provide the much awaited answer to the fate of ministers facing serious charges in CBI cases, sources said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
