City spruced up for Shab-e-Baraat
Muslims in the city are preparing to spend Shab-e-Baraat, the blessed night, on Thursday, in prayers. Many will visit graveyards to seek forgiveness for their dead. Graveyards have been spruced up and mosques have been lit up. Meanwhile, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is making special lighting arrangements in important graveyards for the convenience of those who will be visiting.
Many Muslims fast during the day and pray on this night, which is 14 days ahead of the holy month of Ramzan. “It is time to pray. This night is not just praying for the dead, but also praying for the living. The entire year’s destiny is written on this night. It is preferred to fast for two days on either side of Shab-e-Baraat,” says Sheik Taha Al-Amoudi who lives in the old city. Practices like feeding the poor are popular on this night.
People gather in bylanes and cook and distribute food to the poor. The belief is that this good deed is done for the good of the departed souls. Religious talks and sermons are given and in addition to the graveyards, dargahs of prominent saints in the city are also visited by devotees bearing flowers.
