Chiranjeevi seeks sub-plan for BCs
As the Congress government decides to bring in legislative protection for the Scheduled Castes and Tribes sub-plan funds, the party’s Rajya Sabha member, Mr K. Chiranjeevi has demanded that more seats be allotted to Backward Classes in law-making bodies, and the creation of a sub-plan for BCs on the lines of SCs and STs.
In a press statement released on Sunday, Mr Chiranjeevi complimented both Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha for agreeing to bring in legislation for protection of sub-plan funds for SCs and STs, which has been hitherto diverted to other projects and schemes.
But he also asked the Congress leadership to concentrate on the welfare and development of BCs. More seats should be granted to this section in all legislative bodies, and a sub-plan created for BCs to protect the funds earmarked for their welfare and development, he said. Mr Chiranjeevi’s statement comes in the backdrop of the Telugu Desam announcement that it will grant 100 party tickets to BCs for the Assembly polls, and the YSR Congress Party announcing that it supports allocation of 100 Assembly seats to BCs.
Mr Chiranjeevi, founder of the erstwhile Praja Rajyam, gave more than 100 seats to BCs in the 2009 general elections to Assembly. Now that he has merged his party with the Congress, he wants to push his pet BC agenda here too before it gets hijacked by opposition parties.
