Bypolls: RTC to cover up bus ads
The Election Commission on Monday ordered APSRTC to remove all government advertisements on the buses plying in all the Assembly and Lok Sabha segments going for the bypolls. Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal said that it was up to the RTC to either cover up those advertisements or remove them from the buses plying in various areas in the bypoll segments. The CEO said that the EC has sought a report from the Anantapur collector about newspaper reports that the minister S. Sailajanath distributed assets to beneficiaries in Anantapur Urban constituency on Sunday.
“Once we receive the report from the Collector we will decide how to proceed further,” he said. When contacted, a senior official from APSRTC who didn’t want to be named, said, “It’s difficult for us to remove the advertisements, some buses will ply from one constituency to another via the bypoll segment. It will be a loss to our advertisement revenue too. We are going to hold a meeting soon with regional managers and will try to implement the EC orders”.
Meanwhile, Mr Bhanwar Lal said there would soon be a meeting with Income Tax officials on how to proceed with the incidents where officials seized Rs 9 crore during the 2009 general elections and Rs 13 crore during the seven Assembly bypolls held recently. “The seized cash has been deposited in the Union government account, but we will hold discussions with I-T officials on the status of cases booked against some persons and filing of chargesheets against them,” he added.
