Basheerbagh pipeline leak disrupts water supply
Drinking water supply to the Oil Seeds Colony near Liberty and two slums in Sanjay Gandhi Nagar and Chandranagar on Thursday was affected following a major leak in a 200mm pipeline under the Basheerbagh flyover. Tonnes of water gushed out of the pipe when the supply began at around 10 am on Thursday. Water entered shops, most of which had not yet opened.
The GHMC had cautioned against ongoing tunnelling work by the Water Board below the Basheerbagh flyover. The tunnelling work to lay the main sewer pipelines was quite close to some of the pillars of the flyover, which might affect the safety and stability of the flyover. They had cause to be worried. In 2007, the scaffolding of the under-construction Punjagutta flyover had collapsed due to seepage of water from a leaking water pipeline under the flyover. Two people had been killed.
Senior officials of Water Board rushed to the spot of the leak on Thursday. Enquiries revealed that the tunnelling work was shifted further away from the pillars following the alarm raised by the GHMC. This was said to be the reason for the water pipeline burst as the new location was close to the water pipeline which was damaged during the drilling of a trial pit as part of tunnelling. The water supply will be restored by Friday, said officials.
