Bar elephants in rituals, HC urged

A city-based NGO, People for Animals, has moved the AP High Court seeking a bar on lending any elephant from zoological parks and to prohibit use of the animals during Bonalu, Moharram and other religious rituals and processions. Founder-secretary of the organisation Vasanti M. Vadi, urged the court to direct the forest authorities and zoo directors concerned to immediately release all elephants held by the zoos or individuals, either captive or otherwise, and to transport them to their natural habitat. She contended that use of elephants for any religious or other purposes was illegal and against provisions of wildlife conservation statutes.

Writ in HC on ‘anti-muslim’ film
The High Court has been urged to issue direction to impose a ban on the screening of the film Gangs of Wasseypur, as some scenes in the film could allegedly hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. Filing a writ petition, Congress leader Abid Rasool Khan said the film was banned in Qatar and Kuwait, and a petition was pending against it in the Jharkhand High Court. Mr Khan alleged that director and producer of the film have portrayed two Muslim sections in a bad light, showing Qureshis as butchers and murderers and Pathans as looters and contract killers.

Recently released, the film also shows Muslim women as prostitutes and with low virtue, Mr Khan contended. He urged the court to direct the CBFC to cancel the film’s certification.

Petition against power plant
The Srikakulam unit of AP Civil Liberties Committee has filed a petition in High Court challenging the proposal to set up a 2640-MW thermal power plant at Bhavanapadu in Santha Bommali mandal of the district. The APCLC challenged the Union ministry of environment and forests’ move to grant environmental clearance to East Coast Energy Ltd to set up the coal-based power plant. It told the court that residents of Bhavanapadu and neighbouring villages like Kakarapalli, among others, were agitating against the proposed power plant.

The petitioners said the proposal was given the go-ahead despite a report by the expert appraisal committee warning abo-ut the presence of wetlands in project area.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
