Austere state stops hiring
Following the footsteps of the Centre, the state government is set to enforce an austerity drive by stopping any further recruitment of outsourcing staff, as also pruning the existing workforce. According to a Government Order issued on Tuesday, state government departments have also been barred from any meeting or conference in five-star hotels. The Government Order (GO 152), issued by the state finance department, asks all state government departments to minimise expenditure on entertainment, air travel, advertisements and official tours, among others.
The Government Order also bars foreign visits at public expense and says only ministers and officers drawing a salary upward of Rs 80,000 would be allowed to travel by air. Officers who are not eligible should not be given permission for air travel, the Government Order directs. Even those allowed air travel should fly economy class for domestic travel, it specifies. The government also banned any post upgrading, unless very necessary, and the same applies to vehicles.
The Government Order says there would be no additional provision for travel allowance for official tours, as officials have been directed to limit jurisdiction of tours. The government also put a stop to travel allowance and daily allowance to officers who travel on transfers. These instructions are applicable to panchayati raj institutions, all local bodies (including municipalities), and universities, besides departments of the Secretariat.
