Arrests continued, A-G tells court
A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar sought response from the state government on the transfer of K. Srinivas Reddy from the ACB.
The Bench was dealing with a batch of petitions urging the court to monitor the ongoing probe into the liquor syndicates and also seeking a CBI probe into the liquor scam.
When the petitions came up for hearing on Friday, advocate-general A. Sudarshan Reddy produced the records pertaining to the transfer and promotion of the official.
The Bench initially remarked there was no need to go into the records as everything in the file had been published in newspapers.
But after perusing the records and apparently satisfied with the process of promotion, the Chief Justice told the counsel appearing for the petitioner, O.M. Debara, that Mr Srinivas Reddy was not transferred overnight and there was a long process involved in promotion and transfer.
The advocate-general told the court that even after the transfer of Mr Srinivas Reddy, the ACB had registered many fresh cases and arrested several others, including the then district collector of Khammam.
Mr Sudarshan Reddy contended that there was no instance of interference of the government in the probe, and that the allegations were without factual basis.
Meanwhile, P.V. Krishnaiah, advocate and the petitioner in another writ seeking a CBI probe into the liquor scam, told the court that Mr Boobathi Babu, the additional-DGP, “cannot hold the charge of the Anti Corruption Bureau.”
He contented that the post of the ACB DG was a cadre post and urged the court to direct the state government to post a regular director general-cadre officer to head the agency.
The Chief Justice asked Mr Krishnaiah whether he wanted the court to transfer Mr Boobathi Babu from the ACB.
When he replied in the affirmative, the CJ said “we will deal the matter,” and adjourned the hearing to June.
