APPCB wakes up to pollution in Kazipally
The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board seems to have finally smelled the stink of pollution caused by units in the Kazipally and Gaddapothram industrial areas. On Wednesday, the Board began taking measures to tackle effluents accumulated in these areas in Jinnaram mandal of Medak district.
Reviewing the Consent for Operation of various factories, the Board’s member-secretary, B.S.S. Prasad, asked Model Industrial Association president K. Raja Rao to ensure that corrective measures are in place in a few days. Else, the erring industrial units should be ready to face severe action, he indicated.
The factories were told that they could send effluents to a common treatment plant at Patancheru and clear seepages every day to ensure zero-accumulation.
Dr Divi Sarangapani Iyengar, former deputy director and head, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, and Ch. Padmanabha Rao participated as members of the committee. Activists say lands in the 22 affected villages are unfit for cultivation.
