5 men arrested in jewellery heist case

In an interesting twist to the Domalguda jewellery store heist, the Chikkadpally police has arrested five persons, and has exposed the false claim of the victim regarding the value of the stolen goods.

The victim had allegedly inflated the value of the jewellery stolen. Police said the burgled property is worth Rs 7,50,000 and not Rs 2.71 crore, as was claimed by the proprietors of RSR Jewellers. The cops said the entire booty has been recovered. The police nabbed five petty thieves — J. Santhosh Naik, M. Lohith Das, M. Ramdas, V. Vikram, and Ambothu Shiva on Wednesday. All of them hail from Mahbubnagar. The cops said the accused are autorickshaw drivers and used to steal sanitary equipment.

According to the cops, the thieves broke into the building to steal taps, but they managed to get into RSR Jewellers’ office. “They found the biometric key-enabled locker that can be opened only with the thumb impressions of the petitioner and his sister. Since they couldn’t open it, the thieves took it to a hillock near Amangal and broke it open,” said Dr Tarun Joshi, DCP, Central Zone.

Meanwhile, it has been found that the victims had inflated the value of the stolen goods. In their complaint on May 7, the owners — R. Sudheer and Naga Jayashree — had claimed that the value of stolen property was about Rs 2.71 crore. However, police said that after checking the details of purchase and delivery bills of RSR Jewellers, it was found that the owners had created fake bills worth crores to inflate the value of the burgled property. “The firm is insured with New India Insurance for Rs 20 crore and Rs 3 crore against burglary/theft. So the exaggeration could be an attempt to get the insurance amount,” said Dr Joshi.

“The CBI had slapped two cases on Ms Jayashree for forgery under the IT Act,” said ACP T. Chandra Shekar Reddy. The police is now seeking legal advice to proceed against the complainant.
