4 dead as rains lash AP
Four persons were killed in rain-related incidents as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal caused copious rain in most parts of the state.
Hyderabad recorded 32.4 mm rain till 8.30 pm, which caused traffic snarls and water-logging. Heavy rainfall was also recorded in the coastal districts, including Visakhapatnam.
The Met department forecast moderate to heavy rain, especially over Telangana and coastal Andhra, in the next 48 hours as the monsoon gained momentum along with the development of a system over the northwest Bay of Bengal.
Met officer Ram Subra-manyam said, “It’s raining due to the development of a system over northwest Bay of Bengal adjacent to the Odisha coast.
Under the influence of this system, coastal AP, Telangana region and Rayalaseema will get moderate to heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours.” The Cyclone Warning Centre, Vizag, too predicted rain in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.
Meanwhile, three persons drowned and crops were damaged in Niza-mabad while one person died in Vijayawada.
Two of the dead were identified as Rama Goud, 55, of Jalalpur, and Sheik Jahangir of Badapahad.
Traffic on the National Highway connecting Vijayawada and Jag-dalpur was disrupted due to the waterlogging. The district recorded an average rainfall of 6.43 cm.
Meanwhile, the Kakinada-Secundera-bad Goutami Express was cancelled along with a host of other trains as the rail tracks got submerged following downpours over Telangana and Andhra.
Heavy rain alert sounded in city
The GHMC has sounded a rainfall alert and set up control rooms to meet any eventuality, following reports of possible heavy rains.
According to the IMD Doppler weather radar inferences, the rain clouds that are now at Nizamabad may reach in the city within 90 minutes, causing heavy rainfall.
On Monday, the Hussainsagar crossed its Full Tank Level, though not water is flowing through the vents at 513. 35 feet.
People residing in the low-lying areas, those who reside along bunds and tanks were asked to be alert. Mayor Majid Hussain told zonal and deputy commissioners to be vigilant as there is a depression and heavy rainfall can be expected.
The mayor directed officers and corporators to be available on their cellphones and wireless sets.
Officials were asked to inform the public residing alongside the the Hussainsagar surplus nala areas about the rain forecast.
