1,200 get hired at job fair, rush catches civic officials off guard

The job fair organised by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in the old city on Tuesday could well be deemed a runaway success, as nearly 1,200 out of about 8,000 unemployed youths who came for the event had bagged a job by evening. Their monthly salary package, according to organisers, ranged between Rs 4,000 and Rs 15,000. The highlight of the day was the enthusiasm among the young men and women, with well over 3,000 women, most of them clad in burqa, competing with their male counterparts.

Representatives from about 40 private companies participated in the fair. Organisers said nearly 3,000, of the 7,000 names registered, are likely to bag jobs. Among jobs that went out were of telecallers, sales representatives, security guards, sales and courier boys, and delivery boys. Most jobseekers who arrived at the venue, Owaisi’s School of Excellence in Chandray-angutta, were from the old city, with officials caught off guard at the rush. While the police initially found it difficult to handle the situation due to the endless queues, and organisers fell short of application forms, the fair-like atmosphere never left an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

According to the organisers, shortlisted candidates would be called for individual interviews, followed by orientation programmes, before they are absorbed fulltime. Fatima Begum, an Intermediate student, said, “I am looking for a day job. My family would not support night-shifts.” Recalling being paid on an hourly basis as a part-timer while doing his barrister course in the United Kingdom, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who inaugurated the event, urged the youth to work hard. Mayor Majid Hussain said GHMC will organise such job melas at one of the five zones once every two months.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
