No ifs, only butts

Posteriors have always been a problem area for Indian women. Since this is an important component of any woman’s figure, the shape can make or break her physical appearance. A woman’s posterior is classified into four types — tomato, potato, pear and nectarine. Fitness experts believe that sculpting posteriors is a time-consuming yet, a possible task.

Tomato
Women with a tomato shape have a plumper and rounder backside, like Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez. Though near perfect, they might require a little toning. Sanyogita Raman, a Mumbai-based fitness trainer, says, “Since they already have a round rear, they can go for regular cardio and leg workouts. Cardio exercise plays an important part if you want to change or alter the size of your thighs and butt.” Lunges, forward marches and squats are very effective for this shape.

Potato
Women with a potato-shaped rear have a wide waistline with asymmetrical doughnuts. “Most Indian women have this type of backside. The first step to tone them is by working on the obliques and then toning the rear,” explains Sanyogita.
Shalini Bhargav, another Mumbai-based fitness trainer, says that workouts like
side bridge, cable side bends and ball side crunches will help tone the sides. “Apart from cardio, lunges and squats, potato-shaped people will have to push themselves a little more to get that perfect butt. The difficulty level increases as they do sumo jumps, taping push ups and leg lifts,” continues Shalini, who asserts that the difficulty level of exercises must increase gradually.

Pear
When a woman has a pear-shaped body, she has a narrow waist and a rear that’s almost twice as wide at the base. The exercises remain the same with more number of repetitions. “Apart from exercises, women with this shape have to be very careful about their diet. In most cases, they have to reduce their overall weight. They must avoid oily, deep-fried food and intake of red meat must be reduced,” says Sanyogita. While potato-shaped women do 20-25 repetitions of each exercise, pear-shaped woman must do 30-35 repetitions.

Nectarine
These women have a small and slim rear. “It’s very difficult for nectarines to enhance the butt just by exercising. They can eat meat to gain weight around that area and do regular exercises for a fitter body,” concludes Sanyogita.
