Sharmila takes honour on Day 1
Sharmila Nicollet, the only Indian player to hold a full card on the Ladies European Tour, shot a one-under 71 in her first tournament in India in more than six months to take a two-shot lead on the opening day of the Rs 10 lakh Hero-KGA Women’s Pro Golf event in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old was the only player to shoot a sub-par round in the first round of the first leg of the 2012 season on the Hero-WGAI Tour.
Trailing Sharmila by two shots were Neha Tripathi (73) and Saaniya Sharma (73). One shot further adrift were Nalini Singh Siwach (74) and local amateur Aditi Ashok (74).
Vani Kapoor, making her professional debut, finished the day with an impressive 75 despite finding water on the very first hole. Smriti Mehra had a tough day with a five-over 77.
Neha Tripathi, who won the event last year, had five birdies — the most by any player on the first day — but she also gave away six bogeys in her card of 73.
