Ahmed cards 3-over in Rd 2, retains lead
Overnight leader Syed Saqib Ahmed had an ordinary round of 3-over par on the second day of the Tata Steel IGU Gujarat Open Amateur Championship at Kalhaar Blues & Greens Golf Club in Ahmedabad on Wednesday but still emerged as the clubhouse leader after 36 holes. Syed’s total after two rounds of the event is 140.
Samarth Dwivedi was also successful in maintaining his second spot on the leaderboard at 2-under par.
The round, however, belonged to Chandigarh golfer Feroz Singh Garewal, who carded the only under par round on the day to rise to tied third with three others from his overnight 10th position.
Garewal turned in a card of 1-under par for the day in windy conditions to position himself well behind the top two after the second round even as 50 amateurs made the cut.
Garewal, one of the top ranked amateurs, played a bogey free front nine to facilitate a total of four birdies and rise up the leaderboard giving himself a shot at winning the title. The day’s second best card was by Noida’s Gaurav Verma, who played an even par, followed by S.K. Lakra and Ainesh Ahluwalia, each of whom bogeyed the 18th hole to finish one-over.
With winds expected to play some part in the forthcoming rounds, a shakeup is expected in the top ten placed players in the leaderboard.
