Train your brain
Personalised brain training begins with a customised plan, goal-based cognitive exercises, and improvement potential tracking. I was quizzed on five core brain areas: memory, attention, speed, flexibility, and problem solving. My training plan involved 40 daily sessions of Basic Training, 20 sessions of Memory Boost, and 20 sessions
of Attention Boost. The estimated Brain Profile Index (BPI) suggests sticking with the schedule could result in an 81 per cent improvement in my grey cells performance!
Lumosity.com is a must-visit site. Even at my skeptical best about self-administered and supposedly customised tests, I was impressed with the clean look and feel, elegant copy, and the authoritative tone and manner, complete with scientific underpinning. Impressed, I moved on, and started training!
Speed Match was my first test. I stumbled through the rapid fire section and ended with an embarrassing 67 per cent. Memory Matrix addresses spatial recall, and this was my next round. A pattern appears on a grid and fades away. A moment later, I have to re-trace the pattern from memory. I reached the 8x8 tile grid level, and ended the round at 1015 points, initially buoyed by the accuracy of my responses, and then dismayed by repeated clumsy errors in grid after grid.
The Birdwatching round is about improving visual perception and attention. A spectacular aim-and-shoot (photograph) round followed. Remember the alphabet that appears for barely a moment. Capture the position of the bird with your peripheral vision. Click on the bird’s position. Greater accuracy means higher points. Recalling the alphabet helps you spell out the bird you captured. I caught a booby, a woodpecker, and with several misses, had just 5 exposures left in hand. Amazing scenery. Fluid action!
Daily session 1 covered Speed, Memory, and Attention modules. Basic Training session 2 involves Flexibility and Problem Solving. The Word Bubbles round is all about vocabulary fluency. Another incredible find! Lumosity.com is an inspired initiative, packed with intriguing learning games. I’m absolutely delighted with this find!
