‘Scent’sing new technology

We have been using the Nakamichi DVD 10 player for the past three years. Since the player was throwing open all the region 1 original discs from the tray, we were advised to replace the pickup. Once we did that, the system is playing all the region 1 movies excepting one disc ‘Terminator 2 —Judgement Day.’ Each time we try to

play this disc, the player throws the disc open, from the tray. The message that flashes is “open.” We do not understand the reasons for this particular disc not playing. What can we do about this?

Generally, when the tray behaves erratically in a DVD player, the problem lies with the tray loading mechanism. A weak laser beam could cause a similar problem too. The laser pickup, like any other light emitting diode or bulb, has a specific shelf life. When the laser pickup becomes weak, it fails to read certain discs and data and region codes on the disc know as TOC data. Having changed the pickup, your problem it seems has been resolved except for the persistent problem with the Terminator disc. We advise you to try playing this disc on another multi-region DVD player or on your PC/laptop. If you face a similar problem there, it means that the disc is faulty or the TOC data is corrupted. If it works fine on the other DVD play devices, then we suggest you take it back to the workshop that installed the new pickup, and ask for a slight realignment of the pickup. Cleaning of the pickup could also solve the problem.

Holographic TV
The future of television is virtually real and apparently fragrant. In our earlier column, we spoke of the arrival of the holographic TV with life-like 3D images. A TV that emits fragrances has been making headlines lately.
It is reported that Japanese scientists have developed a technology which will emit the fragrance of the perfume that your favourite model on TV is wearing. It has been aptly named ‘Smell-O-Vision.’ Imagine a TV with both these features combined. Wow or what!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
