Yadav brace helps Mumbai stay afloat
Mumbai FC registered a 2-0 win over Mohun Bagan to avoid relegation in the I-League match at the Cooperage here on Friday.
Skipper Abhishek Yadav scored a brace and was awarded the man-of-the-match award.
The home team dominated the proceedings in the first half. The team created many chances, but striker Bashiru Abbas erred on as many as four occasion much to their dismay. However, skipper Yadav put the team in the lead in the 11th minute, scoring off a penalty after Subhas Chakraborty was brought down by Ishfaq Ahmed.
Yadav’s second goal came in the 24th minute. Bashiru’s attempt to get past Bagan goalkeeper Pralay Dutta came to naught as the latter cleared it with ease. Yadav, though was quick on the rebound and netted the ball in to make it 2-0.
In Kolkata, Sporting Clube de Goa defied the odds to beat Chirag United 1-0 at the Howrah Municipal Corporation Stadium.
But their effort went in vain as Mumbai FC’s win over Mohun Bagan confirmed the Goan outfit’s relegation to the I-League Division II.
Sporting had their way through substitute Anthony Pereira, who scored the winner in the 66th minute.
However, the club will appeal to the All India Football Federation to allow them and Lajong FC to remain in next season’s I-League as Mahindra United are already disbanded.
A letter in this regard will be forwarded to AIFF by Monday, Vaz added.
PTI adds: Churchill Brothers of Goa thrashed Air India 5-1 at the Nehru Stadium in Margao and finished second in the I League.
