Sueoka powers Bagan past EB
Mohun Bagan made amends for an embarrassing loss earlier in the season by beating arch rivals East Bengal 2-1 in their I-League encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday. Japanese Ryuiji Sueoka was the man for Bagan, playing a pivotal role in both goals.
Bagan took the lead in the 14th minute when Sueoka, having snatched the ball from Beikhokhei, unleashed a precise cross which Jose Ramirez Barreto comfortably headed home.
The Japanese was instrumental again in the 86th minute when he came up with yet another accurate cross from the right flank which substitute Snehashis Chakraborty guided past East Bengal custodian Gurpreet, handing coach Phillippe de Ridder his maiden derby defeat. Yousif Yakubu pulled a goal back for East Bengal in the dying moments.
East Bengal had a better of the early exchanges and let go of a couple of sitters in the first half. Yakubu created an excellent opportunity off Alvito D’Cunha’s centre in the 16th minute, but failed to score despite being inches away from the target.
Mumbai FC look to avoid relegation
Mumbai FC face an uphill task in their bid to avoid relegation as they square off against Chruchill Brothers in their I-League round 25 match on Monday.
Mumbai FC are second from bottom and a win at the Cooperage here will help them move up a notch on the standings and into the safe zone. The local outfit are just a point ahead of bottom-placed Sporting Club de Goa.
