Parker to captain England against Holland

Tottenham Hotspurs midfielder Scott Parker has been named England captain for their friendly match against the Netherlands at Wembley here on Wednesday night.

Caretaker manager Stuart Pearce, taking charge of England for the first time since Fabio Capello resigned as manager earlier this month, has placed his faith in the Spurs midfielder to lead the Three Lions.

The former West Ham, Chelsea and Charlton player was named as skipper over Steven Gerrard, who had been considered favourite for the role.

John Terry the previous captain of the national side, was removed from his post following a racial charge and is awaiting trial.

Terry allegedly racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand and the trial of the case will take place after the completion of the European championships in July.

Terry is unavailable to the play the Dutch due to an injury.

"Congrats to Scott Parker on being named captain for tonight's game. A great honour + one I'm sure he'll cherish. 2-1 win I'm thinking!," tweeted Rio Ferdinand, England and Manchester United defender.

Former England striker Michael Owen also tweeted: "Congrats to Scott Parker. Great honour."
