Indian, Japan youth teams in 1-1 draw
An Indian youth team held the Japan Football Association (JFA) Academy 1 to 1-1 draw in the U-14 SAARC tournament here Thursday, an AIFF statement said.
The Indian boys team comprised of All India Football Federation regional academies.
India surged into the lead in the sixth minute. Aaron's direct free-kick hit the post and striker Krishna Thapa was quick to head in the rebound.
The Indian colts attacked relentlessly, a bit more down the left flank.
The JFA defended well and restored parity just before the interval.
The second-half was keenly contested, and some Indian counter attacks drew appreciation from all.
"To force the JFA team to split points with us is a huge achievement," said Indian head coach Sajid Dar.
Assistant coach Gautam Ghosh said: "Our boys were never overawed and played all over the field."
In an earlier match, the Indian colts blanked Bhutan 9-0. Krishna Thapa scored a hat-trick while Bodo, Vineet and Haasil scored a brace each.
The U-14 tournament will be held Oct 7-20. It is the first overseas exposure for AIFF's regional academy boys.
