India coach’s role under scanner?
National football chief coach Wim Koevermans’ role has come in for a sharp criticsm as India lost their stronghold in the Saff Championships after being beaten by Afghanistan in the final.
Olympian P.K. Banerjee, under whose regime as manager and technical director India had won the title in 2005, on Thursday said the Dutchman should come under scrutiny after Wednesday’s defeat.
“He’s been around for more than a year and is paid a handsome salary. His role should come under scrutiny by an expert panel,” said the former India captain.
Asked whether Koevermans should be replaced, Banerjee said: “Why should I give an opinion on somebody who’s appointed by the federation. The AIFF should look into it.”
Meanwhile in a major embarrassment, India have dropped a whopping 10 places to the 155th spot in the latest Fifa rankings, issued on the day.
