England must stick with Coach Capello: Gerrard

England skipper Steven Gerrard has said that FA should back coach Fabio Capello, as team set off for the Euro 2012. Gerrard, who leads the Three Lions in Friday’s opening qualifier against Bulgaria at Wembley, fiercely disagreed with the fellow striker Jamie Carragher’s view that an English manager should take charge from Capello. He insisted that no Englishman had a track record to challenge the Italian’s.

Gerrard said it would be been silly to ditch Capello, as it was the players who had under-performed. "It’s important that Fabio is still given a chance, because, for me, he’s a fantastic manager. Who out there, who is an English manager who has the CV that Fabio Capello has?" the paper quoted Gerrard, as saying.

"There are still good managers out there, but it would be a kneejerk reaction to sack a manager after one bad tournament, then think everything will be rosy when you start with a new guy and we’ll go on and win the Euros. That’s crazy. It’s crazy to think it’s as easy as that," he added.

Capello continues to be criticised for his poor English and it is speculated that all players are not in favour of him. "The communication isn’t a problem. He talks to the players individually — and as a team — and the message does come across," said Gerrard.

"To be honest, I don’t know if everyone is totally 100 per cent behind him, of course, because I can’t control what’s going through every player’s mind. But I’ve not seen anything that makes me think they’re not," he added.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
