Chelsea will be wary of striker Falcao

It’s that time again. The winners of the Champions League take on the winners of the Europa League in a battle to decide the ultimate dominance of Europe.

Chelsea take on Atletico Madrid at the Stade Louis II in a match which will decide who reigns supreme in Europe.

One would think that the Blues would have the upper hand, being the Champions League winners, and boasting of an obviously better squad.

But as history has often showed us, the smaller teams can always pack a major punch, and in Radamal Falcao — himself one of Chelsea’s long term targets — Atletico have a striker who can decide a game almost single handedly.

But apart from him, Atletico also have the services of midfielder Diego, bought from VFL Wolfsburg, and defender Cisma, who adds to Atletico’s defensive depth, Los Indios could surprise Chelsea and take the trophy home.

Having established their credentials with the Champions League victory, the Blues have strengthened their squad exponentially with marquee signings of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Marco Marin, and most recently, Victor Moses.

Hazard, in particular, has adapted to the Premier League in fantastic fashion, notching up five assists and a goal in his first three competitive games for Chelsea. Form so good, even Fernando Torres seems likely and able to score.

The Belgian has formed a strong partnership with Juan Mata, and together, they provide a number of chances for Torres to score. If anything, Chelsea’s weakness will lie in their defence.

A number of times, their full backs have been caught out of position while attacking, and they have no cover down the flanks, leaving them extremely susceptible to counter attacks.

This match will be a special one for Torres, as he laces up to face the team which first discovered him. At Atletico, Fernando learnt his trade and made his name, even becoming their youngest ever captain.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
