Brandon dreams of playing for European club

It was in the AFC Under-19 qualifiers in Tehran two years back that Brandon Fernandes first burst onto the scene under head coach Colm Joseph Toal.
Since then, the 18-year-old has moved to South Africa playing for ASD-Capetown in the SAFA 2 League. The attacking midfielder was picked by the South African club after impressing scouts at the Manchester United Football Skills tournament in 2009.
Also with English clubs monitoring him, the 18-year-old Goan is currently the most sought young Indian footballer.
In an interview with the All India Football Federation website, Brandon speaks about his experience, his plans. He also sheds light on being approached by many an Indian club and more. EXCERPTS:
On his current club and schedule: I’m currently playing in Cape Town under SRB-ASD for the SAFA 2 League and training with Africa Soccer Development. We do a lot of exposure tours and have toured Spain, Portugal, Belgium, to name a few. Besides providing exposure the tours were intended to catch the attention of as many talent scouts as possible.

On the experience: The experience has been incredible. It has molded me into a better player, smoothened out the rough edges and has given me a tremendous boost to my confidence. I also need to mention that I have improved game speed — both technically and in originality.

On his performance last season:
I played in 12 matches last season and managed to score 12 goals, four of which were from free-kicks. Free-kicks are a challenge which I cherish. Curling it past the wall and having enough power to beat the goalkeeper is what I want to master.

On chances of moving to England: My main focus is to play in Europe. The intention of joining ASD was to make use of the opportunities that would come your way. But I have been on trials and have been told by ASD on areas I need to improve to take my game to the highest possible level. I have age on my side and am working hard with the staff in ASD who are helping me to start my professional career in Europe.

On chances of playing in India:
Yes, I’ve been contacted by numerous Indian clubs but at the moment but focus stays to play elsewhere — in Europe. Maybe in the future I will turn out for an Indian club.

On his future goals: I have been fortunate enough to be a part of India’s squad. We had a nice tournament and some close matches. I aim to carry it forward and wear the Indian senior blue jersey someday.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
