At a time when everything is going virtual; won’t it be wonderful if fashion lovers can take a virtual round of their favourite designer ensembles through an online exhibition? For the first time in India, a website called designemporia.in is showcasing the works of Pankaj & Nidhi, Rahul Mishra and Gaurav Jai Gupta in an online exhibition till June end.

There is a fine line between art and fashion; often fashion is considered superfluous and frivolous, whereas art is more profound. “It’s not fair on designers who put in their heart and soul to create ensembles, because like artists they choose clothes to express their creativity. Usually, people get to see the end product and miss out on what goes behind its creation, so here’s a platform to introduce the audience to the fashion world in a sincere form. Ramp shows are only for few minutes, but at an exhibition, a designer’s creation can be seen and studied for a long period of time,” says Asha Baxi of NIFT and curator of the first edition of this exhibition.
She adds, “Much has been written about the famous designers, but for this theme, I chose budding designers who are doing good work as it’s a platform for fresh talent. It’s a good concept where art and fashion can be combined together and people can get a better understanding of clothes.”
Surbhi Gupta Tanga, co-founder and director of Design Emporia, feels that there are many e-galleries for designers abroad and its time India should also get a taste of it. She says, “This is a first-of-its-kind endeavour and we are trying to promote young designers who are doing great work in fashion, interiors, lifestyle etc. The theme of the first online exhibition is ‘Genesis of fashion designers in India’. The aim of this exhibit is to display the academic side of fashion and how it evolved in India. There are five limited edition outfits by three designers, in sync with the theme.”
Designer Gurav Jai Gupta, a participating designer, feels the e-exhibit is a great concept, as it will give designers more visibility. He says, “It is a great way to reach out to a wider audience in a faster manner. These days everything is so easily connected via Internet so it will help the costumers interact with designers without any hindrance. It will also bridge the gap between fashion and technology.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
