Cityscapes get couture canvas
In search of inspiration, designer Sanchita Jhulka’s creative canvas has travelled the distance to cover a city and its essence. Titled Cityscape, the Kolkata-based designer has brought graphic elements in the design like lampposts, birds on the wire, relics of the Raj era and high-rises silhouetting the outlines of her dresses.
“The muffled colours, the blotted skyline, the dash of grey asphalt and a dab of off-white blend in the silver of the seat on a busy office day. My line is inspired by these urbane vitals,” she says. The dresses reflect the colours of the roads too, the taxi yellow, grey and white checks, black and white stripes and touches of blue. The hues reflect the different moods and shades of the city.
It’s a diffusion line with dresses, jodhpuris, waistcoats, trousers of different hemlines, kalidaar kameezes with scarves and cigarette pants. There are Indian attires but with western ethos. And the fabrics used are mostly cotton, silk, georgette and chiffon.
“This creation is a tribute to the city I have grown up in. The colours, the sights and the sounds that have blended into my soul have found reflection in the designs, cuts and crafts of this line. It is everyday and also rare,” says Sanchita who showcased her creation at the Kolkata Couture Week.
