The emotional quotient
While many of us spend hours creating a team, picking our guns and rushing into battlefield to dominate or get destroyed; there are some who spend hours exploring a fantasy world, levelling up their characters, acquiring new skills and ultimately defeating the dark lord. I’m talking about role playing games of course; and leading the pack in this genre is none other than Bioware.
It recently won a poll on www.escapistmagazine.com becoming the best RPG developer of all time after getting 50 per cent of the votes!
You might ask what makes Bioware so special? Why do people play these games over and over? The simple answer, in my opinion, is emotional attachment. No one writes better than the guys at Bioware. They create games which connect with us on an emotional level. An epic journey to Baldur’s Gate in search for answers about your own father and origin, fighting across various stretches of the galaxy to protect all of humankind from extinction and preventing an evil wizard from resurrecting the King of Shadows are the kind of stories players experience.
After spending over a thousand hours in Ferelden, The Forgotten Realms, Neverwinter and on Normandy; Bioware makes me feel glad I play video games. If given the chance, I would readily get lost in these worlds again to relive the journey; and reunite with friends of old to save the world once more.
