World’s getting smarter
As consumers, we were spoilt for choice in 2012 when there were newer, better and more awesome products in the perennially bright world of smart gadgets and gizmos. While users of smartphones were left debating which is better — the Samsung Galaxy SIII or Apple iPhone 5 — old favourites like BlackBerry and Nokia were stretching themselves to find a breakthrough in the New Year.
Computer buffs were left debating the pros and cons of tablets — of which there were at least three clear leaders — Apple, Google and Amazon — versus the Ultrabooks that seemed to be taking away the space that was occupied by desktops, and then notebooks. Further breakthroughs are expected in this segment with competitors certain to take on what is called the “Retina Display” by market leader Apple.
Reports have it that the year gone by was not so good for the videogames industry although there was no dearth of new devices from leading makers like Sony and Nintendo and great new games. What 2013 portends is more of the same.
There is also a buzz about devices that may run entirely on cloud computing soon. But can anyone stop the march of technology, which grows by leaps and bounds every year? If dreamer-designers have their way, there may soon be driverless taxis on the streets of Las Vegas. Given that city’s already futuristic looks, it would surprise no one except, maybe, the taxi drivers’ union.
