Home is where the pet is
It’s arguable whether pets, especially dogs, can actually lower the risk of heart disease although the latest research does point in that direction. The counter argument, that pet owners may tend to be generally healthier and possibly younger, is credible too. It does, however, stand to reason that pets have a way of lightening the lives of their owners.
There is no man who can return home even in the worst of moods after a hard day’s work and fail to recognise the warmth and spontaneity of a wagging tail in a bundle of fur symbolising a bond that has existed for some 6,000 years between mankind and the domesticated dog. It’s not without reason that dogs were defined long ago as man’s best friend.
If ownership of pets does indicate lower levels of blood pressure, cholesterol and lower levels of obesity, according to researchers, people may as well adopt a friendly companion soon. The point is a bond exists between man and beast that is generally for the good of society.
The fact that dogs may be forcing their owners to go that extra kilometre at a good pace on a morning constitutional is to be considered a positive signal for canines to be a sought after species. But we would equally recommend humbler animals or exotic birds like talkative parrots who can be delightful companions. If you want to keep your heart healthy, try the nearest pet store.
