Celebs must be careful
All celebrities must learn from the latest episodes involving Britain’s royals. Prince Harry invited scorn on himself by letting his guard down on a recent Las Vegas trip as he cavorted with groupies. The rule about what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas doesn’t really apply to celebs, particularly royals from a land whose prurient media can make mincemeat of privacy claims. His sister-in-law Kate, who will one day be queen, has more reason to feel aggrieved as her privacy was certainly invaded and she wasn’t into any high jinks like Harry. But the point is that today’s paparazzi are so well equipped with zoom lenses and gizmos that there’s no getting away from the fact that celebs nowadays are vulnerable to invasive media and must therefore learn to play safe.
The British media may have respected the royal request to keep Kate’s pictures out of UK publications, but after all they were available just miles across the sea in France and Ireland. One cannot forget how Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a Paris tunnel 15 years ago while trying to escape from the paparazzi. Those in public life simply must live with the fact that their names and pictures will get splashed in the media, and not always at times of their choosing. In this age of instant communications, a celeb’s life is no bed of roses.
