Tandoori twist to momos

Snacks in the city are no longer restricted to boring chaats and golgappas, as the latest temptations in the list of quirky savouries are interesting tandoori momos. These are just like our favourite traditional momos (dimsums), but with a roasted twist. Although steamed and fried momos have been a foodie’s delight, this lip-smacking experiment by Mandeep Singh and Akhil Kumar at Quick Dining (popularly known as QD’s) has filled the lanes of Kamla Nagar with its humble smoky aroma. “We basically wanted to make chocolate momos, but in the process, we accidentally came up with the tandoori version of it. Since many students from the North-east are looking for traditional momos and the North Indian crowd wants them to be spicy, we decided to give them both, in our own tandoori way,” says Mandeep Singh of QD’s.
The place is highly recommended at a time when your stomach grumbles. What makes the place even more comfortable, is its young feel as this place is always full of college students. “The momos are crispy and not fried, hot and really tasty. OD’s has become the talk of the campus for its popular combo of tandoori momos with fruit beer for less than Rs 100. The momos are the colour of sunset, orange bordering on red and accompanied by garlic sauce. They looked unappetising in the beginning, but taste like a sizzling tandoori kebab that’s been served to you straight out of a tandoor,” says Karmini Sharma, a foodie and a regular there.
And if Chinese food entices you, one can also savour tantalising regular goodies like chilli potato, hakka noodles, North Indian thalis and Kathi rolls with green apple mojito and peach iced tea. “The portions are large and piping hot. Although it takes a braveheart to traverse the lanes of Kamla Nagar in Delhi University in this heat, but if you’re a hungry, home-food-deprived student, that’s a minor hitch. And the place gives fancy culinary treats without actually emptying your wallet,” says Tshering, a student of Miranda House.
And if Kamla Nagar is way too far for you, hop to their recently opened Satya Niketan outlet, that’s bigger, and serves even cool Chinjabi (Chinese and Punjabi flavours)?and desi dishes. “Unlike other places where the potato is overpowered by chilli or the Manchurian resembles pink curry, the mix of sweet and sour sauces is just right here. Me and my friends often come here when we’re feeling nostalgic and want to relive our good old college days,” sums up Chetna Shrivastava, a teacher and also a student of Daulat Ram College.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
