Youth run over by Metro, dies
A 25-year-old man was killed at the Uttam Nagar West Metro Station on Saturday morning when he illegally tried to cross over to the platform on the opposite side by jumping on to the track instead of using escalators or lifts at the station.
The deceased, identified as Rahul Thapa, 25, son of Gopal Thapa, a resident of Loha Ghat Thana, Uttarakhand, jumped on to the Metro rail tracks from the platform just as a train from Dwarka going towards Noida was entering at Uttam Nagar West Metro Station. He probably failed to notice the train, said sources.
“The train operator immediately applied the emergency brakes but by the time train stopped, two coaches had already entered the platform area. The man, was immediately taken out from under the train by the station staff with no visible injury marks on him and was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. The doctors declared him dead at around 9.30 am,” the spokesperson said.
The police was informed and they reached the spot. “We have registered a case and investigation is on,” a Delhi police official said.
The Delhi Metro has asked Delhiites to avoid such actions that lead to unfortunate instances.
As per the Delhi Metro (Operation & Maintenance) Act, walking on or crossing the railway track is a punishable offence.
