Youth dies in police custody
A 25-year-old youth died on Sunday after allegedly being thrashed in police custody under mysterious circumstances at the Khayala police station in west Delhi. Two police officials have been suspended following the incident for allegedly thrashing the victim. A departmental enquiry has also been initiated against the duo.
Three days after being admitted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, the victim, identified as Amit, a resident of Raghubir Nagar, succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning.
According to a senior police official, the deceased was detained by the police on June 26 when he was quarrelling with his mother and father under the influence of alcohol.
“Two police officials — sub-inspector Anoop and constable Naveen Kumar — were sent to attend a call of fighting in a house. Officials found that Amit was throwing household items and was fighting with his father Tej Pal and mother Sita Devi. His mother told police officials that Amit came to house in drunken state and was fighting with them,” said a senior police officer.
The policemen tried to pacify Amit but he did not heed. Officials claimed that on the request of his mother they brought him to the police station.
The officials then allegedly thrashed him up in the lock up where he fell unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital at around 11.50 pm and was found unfit for giving statement.
Citing his critical condition, the doctors shifted him to the Deen Dayal Uapadhyay Hospital where he died in the ICU on Sunday.
As the family of the deceased was informed about his death, scores of locals gathered outside the police station with parents of the deceased demanding action against the police officials.
“They have killed my son. They have beaten him with sticks and kicked him hard. How can one die when he is in police custody and they also knew that he was drunk. In place of bringing him to police station, they would have taken him to hospital first,” said Sita Devi.
Sensing the gravity of the case, senior official immediately suspended sub-inspector Anoop and constable Naveen Kumar and a departmental enquiry has been initiated against them.
However, a senior police officer said that Amit had previous head injuries and that he had told the policemen at police station that he had fought with someone at around 6.30 pm near his house and got injured.
When the police inquired about the said fight in the neighbourhood, it failed to get any witness of the incident.
