Women still lag due to social mindset: Vyas
Despite tall talks of women empowerment when it comes to political empowerment, the fair sex fairs poorly in Delhi. Out of the 70 Assembly seats in Delhi, only three have women legislators, which includes chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who has been in power for 12 years now.
Out of the 13 women in the fray, only three managed to win seats in Delhi — all from the Congress. Besides chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Congress’ Kiran Walia and Barkha Singh won from Malviya Nagar and R.K. Puram, respectively in 2008.
While the BJP’s three women candidates had lost. One major upset was BJP candidate from Patel Nagar, Anita Arya, who won the Karol Bagh Lok Sabha seat in 1999, but lost in 2008.
“The condition of women has changed a lot, the government has framed several laws and we are working towards giving them a level-playing field, but the problem lies in social mindset,” said National Commission for Women chairperson and MP, Girija Vyas.
Talking to the media on Tuesday, Ms Vyas said that in urban areas including Delhi, women are not treated at par with men.
