Woman shot dead in party, probe on
A 27-year-old nurse at an MCD health centre was shot dead by her relative during a family party at Najafgarh in southwest Delhi on Friday evening. The accused, a cousin of her husband, is absconding.
According to the police, Amita Dahiya, wife of Sunil Dahiya, whose father is a sub-inspector in the Delhi police, had gone to attend a function of her sister-in-law in New Roshanpura area of Najafgarh on Friday evening. Her sister-in-law had recently been blessed with a child.
Late in the evening, Amita went up to her sister-in-law and asked for her mobile phone, as she wanted to make a call to inquire whether she was on leave on Saturday. Amita worked at Girdhari Lal Maternity Centre, run by the MCD, in Kamla Market.
Around the same time, Amit Dagar, maternal cousin of Sunil, also came there with his wife.
Amita apparently said something to Amit, who was reportedly under the influence of liquor.
He got enraged and suddenly whipped out a countrymade revolver and shot Amita from point blank range. Amita collapsed on the spot and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. Amit managed to escape.
On being informed about the incident, Amita’s father Ramesh Kumar and her brother Mukesh rushed to the hospital.
The police said that the exact reason behind the incident was yet to be ascertained and things would become clear only after the accused was arrested.
Police sources, however, said that Amita made some remarks in jest, which Amit, a financier, did not like.
Meanwhile, since the family of the victim alleged that Sunil used to harass Amita for dowry, the area sub-divisional magistrate has been informed about the incident and an inquest proceeding has been initiated.
The couple have a four-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter. A case of murder has been registered at the Najafgarh police station and further investigations are on.
