UGC advisory panel to track progress
The UGC on Tuesday constituted a five-member advisory committee to track progress in the implementation of newly-introduced four-year undergraduate programme and offer corrective advice on the issue of curriculum.
The advisory committee under the chairmanship of former director general of CSIR and member UGC S.K. Joshi was set up following a meeting chaired by HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju where the issue was discussed threadbare.
According to the advisory committee, it will aid and advice Delhi University in all aspects of implementation of the four-year undergraduate programme.
It added that committee would monitor it in the initial stages as well as later semester for its successful implementation.
The commission cited the UGC Act in support of the constitution of the advisory committee.
As per the Act, “The UGC can recommend to any university the measures necessary for the improvement of university education and advice the university upon the action to be taken for the purpose of implementing such recommendations”.
Along with tracking the progress of implementation, the committee would deliberate on any other issues relevant to the proposed programme and make suitable recommendations.
The statement said that since the under graduate programme entails a significant departure from the existing three year degree programme, “this needs to be monitored closely in the initial stages as well as later semester for its successful implementation”.
UGC member and director of international centre for genetic engineering and biotechnology V.S. Chauhan, chairman of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research Mrinal Miri, director of Tata Institute of Social Science S. Parsuraman and former director of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies Bhuvan Chandel are the members of the committee.
All the colleges under the Delhi University will start registration for four-year programme from Wednesday.
