Two jump to escape blaze, die
Two men jumped to death and seven others suffered injuries after a major fire broke out at a residential building in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh area on Thursday evening.
The police said the incident took place in Beadanpura locality of Karol Bagh when a passerby spotted a blaze on the third floor of the building. He immediately called the Delhi Fire Services and alerted the people in the building.
The fire rapidly spread to other floors and created panic among the people inside the building.
“In an attempt to escape from getting charred, two men reportedly jumped from the fourth floor of the building and fell on the concrete road. They died on the spot. Three fire engines were rushed to the spot and by the time they arrived, a rescue operation had already begun and the neighbours were busy evacuating the people trapped in the building,” a fire official said.
Property worth lakhs of rupees is estimated to have been reduced to ashes in the blaze which took more than an hour to be brought under control.
“Two persons have died while seven others suffered injuries in the fire. The identity of the deceased has not been established so far. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained but it appears that a short-circuit on the third floor sparked off the blaze. A case has been registered and further investigations into the matter are on,” a senior police official said.
