Transmission snags cause long outages
Areas across the city on Friday faced long powercuts due to technical snag in a number of major transmission lines. Some areas in North and Northwest Delhi faced powercuts from 6 pm on Thursday to 12.30 am on Friday due to damages in a 220KV transmission tower of Delhi Transco Ltd.
The transmission tower in Bawana, Northwest Delhi, was damaged in the thunderstorm on Thursday.
Areas like Rohini, Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Mangolpuri and Wazirpur experienced long powercuts due to the damage to the transmission tower.
Officials said a 220 KV transmission line between Bawana and Rohini also developed snags following the thunderstorm on Thursday and it is expected to be restored only by Saturday evening.
Reports of long powercuts were also received from East, West and South Delhi.
Senior power department officials said the outages took place due to snapping of power distribution lines because of uprooting of trees following the rains.
The distribution network was damaged in many areas due to uprooting of trees.
Though the discoms started repair work immediately after the rain, electricity supply was affected on Friday also, the officials said.

EC strikes 13 lakh names off voters list
Age Correspondent
New Delhi, June 7
The State Election Commission has struck off the names of about 13 lakh non-existent voters from the city’s electoral roll following a detailed survey. These voters were removed after conducting due verifications.
Chief electoral officer Vijay Dev said, “We had conducted a house-to-house survey in 2012 in which around 15 lakh voters were identified in the categories of shifted, expired and duplicate’ voters. After conducting due verifications, names of about 13 lakh people have been removed from the list.”
He said the Election Commission had handed over CD’s containing names of these voters to political parties after conducting meetings at the state and district level.
It was a “major exercise which has massively enhanced the purity of our electoral rolls,” he said.
Mr Dev said the commission added 8.18 lakh voters in the electoral roll last year while from January to June this year, names of 4.5 lakh new voters have been added.
“With this total number of electors in Delhi has reached 1.12 crore,” he said.
He said to ensure greater participation of women and youth in Assembly elections, the Delhi Election Commission will launch a special drive for enrollment from July 1. It will be last summary revision of the electoral roll before the Assembly polls scheduled to be held in November.
“The special summary revision will start on July 1 and continue till July 22. During this period, all those who could not enrol in electoral rolls would be given opportunity to register themselves,” Mr Dev said.
Under the drive a total of 1,900 camps will be set up across the city.
