Traffic hit again, CM blames rain
Heavy rains lashed the city on Friday morning leading to severe waterlogging that exposed the poor drainage system and caused major traffic snarls. The city recorded 15.6 mm of rain since 8.30 am on Friday.
Reaching office became an ordeal for office-goers on Friday morning as traffic crawled on several arterial roads after the heavy spell of rain.
The city witnessed massive jams at major intersections such as ITO, Kashmere Gate, South Extension, Laxminagar, Ashram Chowk, Moolchand underpass, Dhaula Kuan, Azad Marg, Gurdwara Nanakpura, Badarpur, Apsara Border, Yamuna Vihar, Okhla Mandi, Uttam Nagar, Kajori Chowk and Nehru Place.
However, in spite of severe waterlogging and traffic snarls in the capital, chief minister Sheila Dikshit again blamed the rain for deteriorating condition of roads and drainage.
“Have you noticed how much it has rained? In such heavy downpour, waterlogging is expected in some places. However, I have not seen waterlogging and traffic jam anywhere on my way but yes it could have happened at some places,” Ms Dikshit said when asked about submerged roads and traffic jams.
Sonal Lalchandani, a commuter said, “I started from my home in Karol Bagh at around 8.30 am and it took me close to two-and-half hours to reach Lajpat Nagar. Usually it takes only 45-50 minutes”.
Waterlogging was reported from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, IIT, Adhchini, Aurobindo Marg, Nizamuddin-Khatta, Savitri to Greater Kailash and Safdarjung U-turn.
Traffic at Pul Prahladpur was diverted to Mathura Road due to waterlogging.
The weatherman has predicted more rains and thundershowers on Saturday.
